Mabuhay House Society Reunites 10 Filipino Organizations for Hub & Spokes Pilot Program Recap

Vancouver, BC – On July 10, Mabuhay House Society (MHS) facilitated a productive roundtable with ten Filipino non-profits for updates and feedback on the Hub & Spokes Pilot Program. MHS aims to improve the program further and help these organizations with community work, capacity-building and collaboration.

Through this event, MHS followed up with groups who previously participated in strategic-planning workshops with the support of MODUS Planning, Design and Engagement in Spring 2024.

Through interactive sessions and guided activities, MHS introduced organizations to The Hub and Spokes model. This framework offers a sustainable pathway for Filipino non-profits to strengthen their programming and services through collaboration, with Mabuhay House Society as the central hub.

 “[The pilot program] was an important step towards a financially viable provincial Filipino cultural center as we needed to understand where community organizations were in delivering programs and services for the future cultural center,” said William Canero, Vice-Chair of Mabuhay House Society.

“Somehow, there has been a divide in our community; however, we realize we need to empower our community leaders to achieve long-term goals. With over 200 Filipino organizations in B.C., MHS continuously supports and unites the community to a common goal by providing our community leaders and members with tools and resources toward good governance, accountability, and credibility.”

These community members and leaders shared their input to further improve and scale the program to better serve our Filipino community. A  final report from the Hub & Spokes pilot program will be ready for release before Fall 2024, providing recommendations and the next steps to the pilot. Mabuhay House Society will use this report to continue supporting community organizations and advocating for funding at all levels of government.

Emphasizing the importance of long-term engagement, the Vice-Chair added, "a project like ours takes an entire community…and it will continue to need the community well after we cut the ribbon after opening.”
