Building Community-Centered Journalism in the Age of AI
Building Community-Centered Journalism in the Age of AI
Filipino journalist Pia Ranada is the head of community of online Philippine news site Rappler and the recipient of the 2024 Marshall McLuhan Fellow.
In Ranada’s talk, “Building Community-centered Journalism in the Age of AI”, she will discuss ways of saving journalism through community-building, and efforts in her newsroom to bring the work of journalism to readers and citizens in new, impactful ways. From a membership program, to AI-driven public consultations, to a social media platform run by journalists, these initiatives in the Philippines aim to build trust between journalists and the public they serve, while helping newsrooms sustain their operations and weather economic and political pressures.
Her topic comes at a time when we are witnessing an unprecedented shift in the landscape of media, where the unreliability of big tech as platforms for news distribution, the increasing polarization of information and the erosion of trust in traditional media have led to a crisis, creating the need for informed civic engagement.
Previously, Ranada was an investigative journalist and senior reporter for Rappler best known for her coverage of the Duterte administration. As Community Lead, she is now responsible for linking journalism with communities for impact and action. The Embassy of Canada in the Philippines awarded her the Marshall McLuhan Fellow for her exceptional commitment to journalism and informing citizens with critical information to enable meaningful public engagement, ensure democratic accountability and impact societal change.
Come join us for an evening with Pia and the Filipino community!
Your participation is important to us. If you need any accessibility, please send an email to mcluhanfellow.philippines@gmail.com.

Grandma. Gangsta. Guerrilla.
This ain’t a sob story about war crimes, dementia, nor getting old. It’s a sprint down the memory lane of a butt-kickin’, bar-spittin’, tough grandma who escapes the care home to be with her family. When our favourite Filipino grandma Lola Basyang goes missing, it’s up to her grandchildren Nika and Jun-jun to bring her back to safety. Using their lola’s unfinished memoir, they find clues to her whereabouts, her full-of-beans origin story and the historical turmoils of their motherland. Reminiscent of their immigration stories, they reflect on what it means to maintain family ties in a Western society.

Website: https://www.riceandbeanstheatre.com/lasangimperyo
rice and beans theatre is proud to bring their production of Carmela Sison's Lasa ng Imperyo to the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival from January 30 to February 8 at The Nest on Granville Island (1398 Cartwright Street)!
In a surprising fusion of theatre and gastronomy, this adaptation of A Taste of Empire reimagines Jovanni Sy’s acclaimed play about the effects of global imperialism on how we produce, prepare and consume food. Presented in Tagalog with English subtitles, the performance guides audiences across the layered history of Philippine cultural heritage through a live cooking demonstration.
This new version brings a fresh female perspective to the piece by replacing the original Sous-Chef Jovanni with the witty and intrepid Sous-Chef Mela. Her task? To cook rellenong bangus, or stuffed milkfish, a dish whose intricate preparation process takes its roots from the country's culinary traditions and colonial past.
As the dish is brought to life, so too are the stories embedded within its ingredients. Sous-Chef Mela’s insights connect the flavours and techniques to broader themes around globalization, cultural identity and resource exploitation, inviting viewers to consider how the global food market continues to be shaped by imperialist legacies.
